FBI Crime Reports Released

Local News

This year’s results are out for the 2015 Federal Bureau of Investigation crime reports.

Many often describe the border regions as crime hotspots.

But is there a ‘crisis along the border?’

As of October 2016, the FBI released the 2015 crime reports.  They detail various types of crimes in cities across the country.

The results: we may actually be safer than other cities.

For example murder rates in McAllen are 1.4 murders per 100,000 people. In Brownsville it’s 1.6.

Some cities that are not along the U.S./Mexico border such as Houston, Dallas, Chicago or Washington are in the double digits.

Detroit is one of the highest at 43.8 murders for every 100,000 people.

The national average is 4.9.

“If you look at FBI statistics, we are safer than the national average. We are certainly safer than a lot of the big cities in Texas that are away from the border, “says U.S Representative (TX-28) Henry Cuellar.

We may hear terms such as ‘crisis on the border’ or other words that describe border cities as active warzones. Some suggest that this negative depiction may actually have an impact on our future progress.

“If you want to recruit professors, if you want to recruit doctors, if you want to recruit other business to come here, they hear those rumors, they hear those statements and then it’s hard to recruit them over here. So it actually affects our economic development,” says Cuellar.

But outside of the FBI statistics, how much is crime in the Valley?

We asked the Cameron County sheriff’s office, who regularly conducts their own crime reports for their insight.

Sheriff Omar Lucio says, “For me to go out there and say here in the county, Cameron County, that crime is going up, no. We have the statistics to prove it that it has not. We will always have burglaries, theft, and domestic violence, of course, that’s any city,  I don’t care where it is.”

You can find these and other valley related crime reports prepared by Congressman Cuellar’s office above.
