MERCEDES, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Mercedes police say the fiery crash on the floodway bridge on Tuesday was the result of a suicide.
The crash happened at 4 p.m. on the westbound lanes of the floodway.
Interim police chief Frank Sanchez said the department received two 911 calls. One caller reported the driver was speeding and the next call reporter reported the crash.
Sanchez told ValleyCentral, “the preliminary investigation suggest this was a suicide, and that the man intentionally crashed into the concrete barrier.”
The interim chief said they determined the 20-year-old man took his own life by the evidence collected shortly after the crash.
The car was engulfed in flames and in danger of falling off the bridge.
“The position as to where the vehicle is at it’s a very critical position to be in, very dangerous one too,” Frank Sanchez, Interim Chief of Police for the City of Mercedes said. “It’s right in between the levee to where you can either go to the left or to the right, and you can fall.”
Police have no released the name of the driver.
SECOND FATALITY ON HIGHWAY IN TWO DAYS
Sanchez said this was the second fatality on the expressway in two days.
He said on Monday night around 8:30 p.m. a man driving a sports motorcycle about 100 mph when he hit a concrete divider as he tried to pass another vehicle. The motorcyclist was thrown into the air and hit the expressway.
He died at the scene. His name has also not been released.
