A normal day in the Flores Household. Erica Flores works from home. She lives with her mother. Maria Helena Flores is retired. She now takes care of her elderly mother and is a full-time grandmother. Today they opened their doors to News Center 23 in the friendly city of Rio Hondo. In a family picture, we see most of the family, the children, grandchildren and all. All except one.
On September 26, 1988, 15-year Michael Flores goes home after band practice. He goes into his bedroom. Turns on the radio and moments later a bullet hits Michael.
Maria Helena Flores recounts, “We heard him fall on the ground. Sergio and I ran over there and found him on the floor, on his knees he had fallen over. His head was on a pillow.”
Authorities pronounced him dead on the scene. Since then investigators have been searching for the shooter.
This week the Texas Department of Public Safety is looking for leads in this unsolved murder. A reward of 6 thousand dollars is being offered to information that leads to the arrest of those responsible. The family has never lost hope. To this day they want closure. They want to know why their son was killed.
Michael would have been in his mid-40’s. His brothers now work in law enforcement.
Maria Helena Flores says, “I suspect that’s why they are in law enforcement. They want to help other people. If they can’t find the killer for their brother, they’re going to help other people find justice for theirs.”
“They took his life too soon. He didn’t get that opportunity to have his family, his career, his life. Whoever did it is out there living their life. It’s not fair… he needs to pay for what he did one way or another.” Says Michaels only sister Erica Flores.
For the Flores Family justice was never served. Nearly 30 years later and the family doesn’t know why their loved one was shot. If you or anyone you know has any information on this case contact the Texas Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477).
