Family of Ivan Reyes Protest the Marco Antonio Gonzalez Trial Verdict

Local News

It has been just a couple of weeks since a jury in Cameron County gave what they alleged was the wrong punishment for former jailer Marco Antonio Gonzalez.

The family of deceased Ivan Reyes protested outside the courtroom against Gonzalez’s punishment of only five years for nine counts of aggravated assault against police officers.

Last year Gonzalez was also acquitted of capital murder charges after he shot and killed Ivan Reyes back in 2014. This was right before an eight-hour stand-off with police while allegedly holding his ex-girlfriend hostage. Ivan Reyes’s parents speak out against what they say is injustice.

Carlos Reyes, Father of the deceased said, “I am asking the governor on behalf of the Brownsville Police Department to fix this mistake. That woman judge is not God for her word to be definite. There has to be a higher power so that this can be fixed.”

Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz has told KVEO, the police officers, the jury and everyone involved in the Marco Antonio Gonzales trial that nothing can be done to correct the erroneous punishment at this time. But he is speaking with State Senator Eddie Lucio as well as other courts to try and get justice.
