Exclusive: Dash Cam Shows Driver and Wife Pleading To Police After Immigrants Found In Trailer

Local News

News Center 23’s Derick Garcia have obtained nearly 3 hours of dashcam footage from the Edinburg Police Department’s rescue of 17 immigrants.

Edinburg Police Department said dispatch received a call from inside a tractor trailer at the Flying J’s Truck Stop.

A Mexican immigrant called a relative and said they were trapped inside and the heat inside was hitting dangerous degrees. Meteorologists reported the temperature in Edinburg topped 101 degrees. In previous reports, temperatures inside trailers can rise to deadly conditions.

The caller gave no description of the tractor-trailer prompting officers to bang on the sides of dozens of locked trailers.

Before the immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Romania suffered from severe heat related illnesses, one officer located the group and found the driver and his wife.

In the video recordings obtained by News Center 23, the woman can be heard crying and pleading with officers to not be detained and denied any knowledge of the group hiding in their load of mangos.

The alleged driver and his apparent wife are in the custody of Homeland Security Investigations, no charges have been filed as of this report.
