This morning Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio released the identity of a woman killed in an alleged domestic violence dispute.
36-year-old Jessica Cortina was allegedly killed by her son’s father, 39-year-old Alvaro Mata Jr. Sheriff Lucio stated that the 17-year-old son called 9-1-1 when his mother came into his room bleeding from the chest. Alvaro Mata Jr. “told the boy to get out and he continued to shoot his wife” according to Sheriff Lucio. Mata Jr., fled from their home in San Benito. He was arrested this morning and is is charged with first degree murder.
Jessica Cortina was a teacher at Wilson Elementary in the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District. The district said “We are heartbroken and saddened to learn of the sudden loss of one of our Wilson Elementary educators, Jessica Cortina, a well-loved teacher who was profoundly committed to the success of our students. We will have a team of HCISD school counselors at the campus to talk to those students and staff who are most affected by this tragedy.”
Cortina leaves behind four boys ages 17, 10, 8, and 4.
If convicted, Mata Jr. faces 5 to 99 years in prison.
