A 16-year-old male is behind bars this afternoon. He is accused of stabbing a 69-yeard old man to death and leaving a second victim in critical condition at a local business in Donna. Arturo Hermes Hernandez was fatally stabbed at Ricos Pollos and Costillas Veracruz Restaurant on Sunday around 4:00 a.m. right before opening the doors for business.
According to investigators the 16-year-old suspect broke in through a window intending to rob the cash register when he saw Hernandez preparing food for the day.
Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra, “The suspect stabbed Hernandez several times with a knife that he grabbed from inside the business.”
After searching the area investigators found a second victim with stab wounds at a business located next door. According to Sheriff Guerra, the suspect was a frequent customer, allowing the second victim to recognize him.
Sheriff Guerra, “As he was fleeing the business, he was seen by our second victim. The suspect attacked our second victim by stabbing him multiple times with a large knife and during that struggle our suspect was also cut.”
The Sheriff says the suspect is a 9th grade student at Donna North High School. He was found at a residence on Guadalupe Drive, just down the street from the crime scene.
