A 28-year-old Edinburg man faces nearly 50 years in prison after a judge accepted his guilty plea to multiple child pornography charges.
In March 2015, authorities were investigating someone in Massachusetts suspected of possessing child pornography. Further investigation showed that Carlos Benjamin Martinez, of Edinburg, emailed several child pornography photos to the suspect, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
A search warrant executed at Martinez’s home in September 2015 led authorities to thousands of pictures and several videos of young children engaging in sexually explicit acts, according to the news release. Authorities also found a video of Martinez engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor about 12 years old on his cell phone, according to the news release. Several electronic devices were seized during the investigation.
Martinez pleaded guilty to a three-count indictment where he was charged with production, receipt, and distribution of child pornography. Today, U.S. District Judge Randy Crane accepted his guilty plea.
Martinez faces up to 30 years in prison for the production of child pornography charge and up to 20 years in prison for the charges of receipt and distribution of child pornography. He also faces a $250,000 fine.
