DPS: Driver in fatal crash near San Juan charged with intoxication manslaughter

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a fatal crash that left one dead and one injured Saturday near San Juan.

According to a release, the crash occurred on Minnesota Road between Veterans Road and Raul Longoria Road at 11:37 p.m.

The investigation finds that both cars involved, a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2014 Ford, traveled the same direction down Minnesota Road when the driver in the Chevrolet lost control and collided with the Ford from behind.

Authorities transported the driver and passenger of the Ford to a local hospital. San Juan resident, Marlena Cantu, 34, sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The passenger sustained minor injuries.

The Chevrolet driver, Miguel Lopez, 34, resident of Alamo, sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Hidalgo County Jail, said the release.

Records show Lopez is charged with Intoxication Manslaughter Felony, Intoxication Assault Felony and Fail to Stop and Render Aid Felony.

DPS officials are further investigating this crash.

The department encourages drivers to plan ahead and drive sober.
