She is 19 and he is 24 and already they are planning to spend the rest of their lives together.
Their story may be that of love songs, but there’s another reason why Tom Carrasco proposed to Jessica Azua.
“She was diagnosed with cancer and I asked her what she wanted and she said an engagement ring,” said Tom.
The sweet smiling teenager hides a very dark reality. Her young body has endured pain in a few short months that some people never have to feel in their lifetime.
She has terminal Stage 4 colon cancer.
“My back hurt, I couldn’t sleep, then my stomach was so swollen I looked pregnant,” said Jessica.
She was given the grave news around the time she turned 19 years old.
“I was in shock and then I had to have a hysterectomy because it had spread,” she said.
With her days possibly numbered her wish was to be married to the man she loves.
With little funds, the Marine and his bride-to-be put the wedding on hold, but they both knew time was not on their side.
Luckily, Terry Perez, owner of The Wedding Gal in McAllen was looking for a couple just like them.
“We are putting together a wedding wish for a deserving couple,” Terry said.
Terry’s husband is battling the same cancer as Jessica so she knows what this couple will have to go through.
Right now she is making this little girl’s dreams come true and has enlisted the help of some of the best in the wedding business here in the Rio Grande Valley.
From photography to the dress itself, this wedding wish is being granted.
Like any bride Jessica wants to look perfect on her wedding day, but she has one fear she’s not sure anyone can help with.
I don’t want to lose my hair,” Jessica said.
Luckily, for Jessica the chemo hasn’t taken too much of a toll plus she will have a stylist on hand to take care of any hair issues that may arise.
Until then, the happy couple can just sit back and enjoy every day together as their June wedding is completely taken care of thanks to the generosity of strangers.
