Donna ISD To Begin Negotiation Terms for Interim Superintendent

Local News

The Donna Independent School District holds a special meeting to discuss terms of an interim superintendent.

As of Friday December 15, Superintendent Fernando Castillo is on paid administrative leave. This comes from a 4-3 decision made by the school board on Tuesday, December 12. The reason may be in part have been performance evaluations. Early this year the school board hired an outside firm, Weaver and Tidwell, to conduct an audit. Now the superintendent is not serving the district, but he’s also not fired.

Donna ISD attorney Alyssa Romero states, “He is still currently the superintendent of schools he is placed on paid administrative leave.”

The board president claims that the board had to make a decision that was best for the children. Although Ceniceros has voted in favor of keeping Castillo, he says that the outcome was what the board decided. He claims that the board is composed of ‘good people at the board with good intentions.’

“At this point I’ve been given the authority to negotiate the terms with the interim. In the event that she accepts it, then it’s finalized, but it’s not finalized until the interim superintendent accepts it.” says Romero.

Castillo Joined the district in 1986. Parents at today’s meeting tell me that they do not want a replacement. They claim to want someone who has been with the district and understands its problems. They say they don’t want a replacement, they want Castillo.

Such is the case with concerned grandmother Fransica Coronado. She says, “I do not approve that he is in suspension and not working in the school district in Donna… If he does not have his credentials or whatever, then put him back as assistant superintendent. Why remove him from the school district.”

Today’s meeting was all about giving the attorney authority to speak and negotiate with interim Superintendent.

In the meantime, Velma Rangel, will serve as the acting superintendent until an interim accepts.

No decision on when the chosen candidate, Filomena Leo will take office. The board president tells me they are looking to get this done by the time children return to school in January.
