EDINBURG, Texas – The Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney’s Office has been named the 2020 Young Hearts Matter Texas Partner for Change by the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV).

The award will be presented on February 14 during the Young Hearts Matter at the Capitol forum in Austin.

Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year and approximately fifty percent of students experience dating violence on school grounds. High school students who experience physical violence in a dating relationship are more likely to use drugs and alcohol, are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior, more frequently develop self-esteem and body image issues, are at greater risk of suicide, and are much more likely to carry patterns of abuse into future relationships.

Criminal District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez Jr. established a Crime Victims Unit during his first year in office and has worked with his office, law enforcement partners, community agencies, and youth in awareness and prevention activities and events.
