EDINBURG, Texas – Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez, Jr., in collaboration with Weslaco ISD and Weslaco Police Department, will host the 5th Annual Young Hearts Matter Teen Dating Violence Prevention event on Saturday, February 22, 2020 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Mary Hoge Middle School located at 2302 North International Blvd in Weslaco.
The prevention event will include a youth rally, a self-defense class for teens, parent sessions, a community fair, and guest speakers from local and county organizations.
In addition to the DA, speakers include Weslaco Police Chief Joel Rivera; Weslaco ISD Assistant Superintendent for Administration & Support Services Dr. Sergio Garcia; Weslaco City Commissioner Place 3 J.P. Rodriguez; Young Hearts Matter Teen Ambassador of Lamar Academy IB Emilia Marroquin; First Baptist Church Associate Pastor of Families & Youths Robin Wiley; and DA Victims Unit Director Rosie Martinez will be the Master of Ceremonies.
Mujeres Unidas, Homeland Security Investigations – iGuardian, DA Victims Unit and the Rio Grande Valley Anti-Human Trafficking Taskforce will provide presentations to parents on cyber-bullying, online safety, healthy relationships, recognizing signs of abuse, dangers of human trafficking, and victim’s services for teen dating violence victims.
Various agencies, non-profit organizations, and law enforcement representatives will participate in the informational fair. Snacks and drinks will be provided. The event is free and open to the public. We encourage everyone who attends to bring their teen dating violence prevention posters and wear orange.
