Cursive Making a Comeback in Texas Classrooms

Local News

Cursive is making a comeback in classrooms across the country, and Texas is the latest state to make it a requirement.

Starting this year, students will be taught to write cursive letters in second grade.

“We’ve always had cursive in our curriculum it’s always been in our state, the state has always mandated it. It’s been in our Texas Essential Knowledge Skills,” said

Dolores Emerson, Elementary Administrator tor Curriculum & Instruction for the Brownsville Independent School District.

But now, new standards set to take effect this Fall, add more emphasis on cursive.

Starting this year, students will be taught to write cursive letters in second grade. By third grade, they will be required to write complete words, thoughts, and answers legibly in cursive writing leaving appropriate spaces between words.

And by fourth grade, they will need to write legibly in cursive to complete assignments.

The changes to the requirements were made by the State Board of Education in 2017 but won’t go into effect until the 2019-2020 school year.
