Critically Endangered Orinoco Crocodile Hatches at Gladys Porter Zoo

Local News

The Gladys Porter Zoo Staff in Brownsville is proud to announce the birth of a rare crocodile species.

Their pair of Orinoco Crocodiles, Blade and Suede have produced their first offspring since their arrival from Canada in 2011.

Weighing in at 63 grams and just over 10 inches in length baby croc Karel was born about back in March and still has a lot of growing to do. Karel is considered a miracle baby as he was the only one to survive from the 25 eggs that were found intact.

Clint Guadiana, Supervisor of Herpetology says, “Right now he’s eating crickets and he’s already had a few meals so that’s a good sign and it’ll take him quite a while to reach the size of his dad, I mean his dad is about 28 years old so it doesn’t happen overnight. In the wild, they’d be very vulnerable at this age because birds can eat them, other crocodiles and anything like that.”

The Orinoco species is native to South America. Due to extensive exploitation for their hides, they are the most endangered of the New World Crocodilian.

Welcome to the world Karel and congratulations to the Gladys Porter Zoo and their preservation efforts.
