County Residents Fighting for Drainage Improvements

Local News

Colonia residents in Hidalgo County are fighting for improvements to the drainage system.

Around 4,000 petition signatures calling for improvements were delivered to county commissioners. The petition was started in March, with the purpose of pressuring county commissioners to create a drainage system that works for all. The signatures were collected by non-profit organizations and colonia leaders. They tell us why this petition is important for the residents.

Stephanie Rojas – Community Organizer, ARISE said, “When you have standing water for weeks in your colonia, and you can’t get out of the house, or your children are going to school with their shoes wet, that’s not living with dignity. We think everyone should be able to live with dignity in their thriving communities.”

Colonia leaders say they will continue to pressure county commissioners for change. They hope more than half of the colonias can have a better drainage system in the near future.
