County jail now above minimum jail standards

Local News

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Two of the hotly contested issues in the Cameron County Sheriff’s race involve jail standards and the lack of technology.

In a recent press conference Sheriff Omar Lucio addressed both issues. On the technology side he says new computers will go into patrol units to make communication faster and allow for paperless reports. The sheriff also produced a certificate showing the county jail now in compliance with Texas code after a series of violations and concerns by state officials.

On November 13, 2019, a state inspection detailed four violations ranging from safety equipment to inmate housing procedures. Meaning the county was not meeting minimum jail standards. Sheriff Lucio releasing the certificate of compliance proving that the county jails are up to code and have resolved the state violations.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has removed Cameron County from its list of non-compliant jails.
