Congressman Asking Governor for Reimbursement

Local News

Congressman Henry Cuellar is asking Governor Greg Abbott to reimburse border communities who assisted in the humanitarian crisis in 2014.

For about three years now, the state has owed the city of McAllen more than half a million dollars. The money is for help provided to immigrant families.

In a letter addressed to the governor, Congressman Cuellar stated, “I understand that there was a misunderstanding between the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and your office that led to the assumption that the use of FEMA’s funds to reimburse communities was not allowed. And that the FEMA bulletin states that the State of Texas may use federal grant funding to reimburse local communities for the costs related to providing humanitarian relief to unaccompanied immigrants.”
