Children in Hidalgo County will soon be able to explore many parts of the world thanks to the help of a local nonprofit organization. Code RGV announced that it will be adding a second bus to their project called Classroom on Wheels.
The organization currently has a bus equipped with computers that goes around colonias to give children the opportunity to use technology for educational purposes. The second bus will be morphed into a mobile computer lab, and it will also have a virtual reality program so children can explore the world around them without leaving home.
Rene Ramirez, Code RGV Treasurer says, “The idea is to try to get the kids out of the colonia for a little bit. Show them the rest of the world. Maybe get them excited for technology, and maybe one day they’ll work in tech. Nobody thinks of McAllen as the tech hub of anywhere, and we need to bring technology to people that don’t have technology.”
So far, Code RGV has raised $75,000 out of the $300,000 needed to keep the second equipped bus running for at least three years. The bus is expected to start running at the beginning of September.
