City of McAllen officials proclaimed the month of March as ‘Women’s History Month’ in the city. News Center 23 spoke to several ladies in leadership roles about how it feels to have their achievements celebrated.

Xochitl Mora – Communications Director said, “It’s really exciting to be part of an organization that recognizes everyone’s contributions and voice. Especially for women, that’s really important. We have so much that we have to balance in terms of work and family.”

Working for an entity with no gender roles is nothing short of gratifying. When you have more women than men holding some of the top positions, that’s a statement worth celebrating.

Roel ‘Roy’ Rodriguez – Mcallen City Manager, “The message is real simple from me, as a city manager, and that is that women from all levels of this organization should know that their potential is limitless.”

Currently 17 women hold director positions in the city of McAllen, compared to 13 male directors.
Assistant City Manager Michelle Leftwich is the only woman apart of the city manager team.

“I’ve always been in non-traditional roles where I may be the only female in a room of men. And, I’m very comfortable with that. There may be some who may see that as a detriment, but it’s never bothered me and I feel like it’s never held me back.”

In honor of National Women’s Month, several of the female employees are planning different activities that may help empower other women to strive for success in the work force.

“In a few weeks, we’ll be hosting Shadow Day with students from South Texas College. And again, it’s all with the idea of encouraging them to seek higher positions, to be able to grow professionally and continue to move the city of McAllen forward.” Said Xochitl Mora.

On International Women’s Day (March 8), the city will be hosting a breakfast symposium featuring a panel discussion of female trailblazers. It’ll be at the McAllen Convention Center and open to all female city of McAllen employees.
