PORT ISABEL, Texas – The City of Port Isabel continues to closely monitor the evolving COVID-19 (Coronavirus) emergency, and take vigorous actions to protect public safety.
As part of these efforts, the city is today urging all citizens to implement social distancing. Avoid large crowds, and unnecessary trips. Continue to practice good personal hygiene by vigorously washing your hands with soap for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer.
Restaurants and businesses are encouraged to adopt best practices for sanitation, and provide take-out or remote services where possible. The city salutes our local grocers who have taken important steps to keep Laguna Madre-area residents and visitors supplied. We urge all residents to avoid hoarding or excessive purchases of staple items. Finally, the city urges its residents to call or check-in on friends and neighbors who may be vulnerable.
On Friday, Mayor Zamora issued a disaster declaration in response to this disease. Subsequently, the city implemented social distancing and enhanced sanitation at its facilities, including closures of the Lighthouse, Visitor’s Center/Keeper’s Cottage, Museums, Library, Event and Cultural Center, Community Center and city administrative buildings.
Earlier today, President Trump suggested that Americans avoid crowds of 10 people or more, and Cameron County issued an order to close all county parks and beaches, which was followed by a similar order from the City of South Padre Island.
