During the month of October, many women take advantage of special discounts on mammograms.
But at South Texas Health System, female patients can also save money on their annual breast exams in May.
Kay Molina a Mammographer and CT Tech says, “The older you get, the more chances of you getting breast cancer.”
That is why doctors and mammogram techs recommend women over the age of 40 to get checked out every year.
“Breast cancer is not painful, so you never know when it’s going to come out.” Said Molina.
The American Cancer Society estimates more than 40,000 women will die from breast cancer this year.
But early detection through mammogram screenings may help reduce that number. And South Texas Health System wants to help.
Molina added, “We wanted to offer a good special for everybody in the middle of the year. So, we wanted to offer those who don’t have resources to pay, a little incentive to come in for a $55 rate, which is not only good for this week it’s also good all month long.”
For many patients like Alicia Bartolon, specials like ‘Cinco de Mammo’ make it more affordable for her to stay on top of her health.
“It’s very good. It makes me feel like the health system really cares about low-income individuals.”
And while some may steer away from mammograms out of fear of pain, doctors say early detection is worth the temporary discomfort.
