The leader of a global movement that promotes the importance of knowing that we matter in life, is visiting McAllen ISD students. ‘Choose 2 Matter’ challenges the youth to accelerate the message that everyone matters.
“We have the power to change the world because each one of us is unique and each one of us has a special talent.” said 8th Grade Student Octavio Cruz.
What is your genius? This is the message at the very core of the ‘Choose 2 Matter’ movement.
Angela Maiers, Choose 2 Matter Founder says, “If you take the structure of your essential needs, food, water, shelter, air. There’s the same hierarchy that exists with mattering. To be seen, to be heard, to be valued and to know what that value is. And ultimately, to know that you’re essential to something bigger than yourself.”
In as little as three hours, students had the chance to learn a little bit about their peers. But more importantly, themselves.
Margux Ochoa, 11th Grader said, “This program and this movement facilitates change in the hearts of so many young people and inspires them to do more and be more, and remember that no matter what they have a place and a voice. Which is something I have tried to promote my entire life. Is that, no matter what you are an equal stabilizer in the community.”
Choose 2 Matter founder Angela Maiers travels around the world to help kids learn how to listen, understand, and value one another. She returned to McAllen High School, where her journey started exactly one year ago.
Angela Maiers, “The change makers, the fiercest, the bravest, the most visionary leaders moving change forward are young people. They have inspired leaders all across the world, all across the globe.”
Students say this campaign has given them a sense of empowerment and the ability to make a difference, no matter how big or small, in other people’s lives.
Earlier this year Mayor Jim Darling declared McAllen ‘A City in Which Everyone Matters’ at his annual state of the city address.
