A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Southbound Commercial Project at the Donna International Bridge Wednesday morning.
The new construction will allow commercial traffic to utilize the bridge.
Officials say they hope to add new technology which will help in decreasing waiting times.
Construction for the new commercial lane is expected to be completed by April 2020.
After the Southbound lane is completed, officials say they will move to the construction of the Northbound lane.
Prior to the project, only passenger vehicles were allowed to utilize the bridge.
