The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the lives of students dramatically. From in-class sessions to distant learning, most affected in all of this is the graduating class of 2020. To honor each class and the hard work they have put in, CBS 4 is honoring valedictorians from each campus across the Rio Grande Valley on CBS 4 Valley This Morning.
EDINBURG, Texas — Meet Yamilex Cantu, class of 2020 valedictorian at J. Economedes High School.
Yamilex has been studying from home since spring break, finishing classes in biology, environmental science and economics.
She tells CBS 4 – getting ready for college has not been easy. She, like many students, is learning how to be a self-taught student.
The pandemic shifted her routine and schedule, especially if the internet connection hinders communication with her teachers. She says she’s become even more disciplined with her schoolwork.
She’s also more appreciative of technology, especially when she can’t connect with teachers or classmates in person.
“You’re not in this alone, and if you feel like this is too overwhelming, get on a Zoom meeting, get on that Google meet and talk to people, express what you’re feeling, talk to friends, talk to family. I think that’s the best way you can handle this.”
She believes this pandemic will better prepare her for the next season of life – college!
Adding this ‘lockdown’ has made her see life in a more positive light.
Yamilex believes this is a time to think about what’s important.
“We’re given this time to where we have the time to reflect on ourselves and we should take advantage of it. We shouldn’t look at the negative things that this pandemic has brought, just look at the positive. If it wasn’t for this, we wouldn’t appreciate things, we wouldn’t spend time with our families. We wouldn’t do things we have put off for so long. That’s all you have to think about is the positive that this has brought us.”
Yamilex will be graduating from high school with an associates from South Texas College.
She plans on studying graphic design at UTRGV and become an art director.
