CBP officials promoting program for faster and more secure border crossings

Local News

PHARR, Texas – Bridge officials are encouraging bus companies to join a program that will promote faster and secure border crossings. Customs and Border Protection’s Electronic Advance Passenger Information System is available to commerical buses traveling from Mexico into the U.S. The program is a web based computer application which allows bus companies to fill out who is on board before arriving at the port of entry. Buses must submit their passenger data a minimum of an hour before arriving at the border crossing.

Philip Barrera, Pharr Bridge supervisor, “It allows us to identify anyboday who might have some suspicious activity. Somebody who might even have some warrants, someone who might need closer attention. It just gives us a heads up per say and be ready when those people do arrive.”

Right now the program is optional. However it will become mandatory later this year. Currently buses who do participate are given front of the line privileges.
