Rio Grande City, Texas (KVEO)— A car accident leads to the search of undocumented immigrants on Wednesday afternoon.
Officials were at the scene of an accident involving three vehicles. Starr County Sheriff’s office spokesperson Carlos Delgado says one of the vehicles was loaded with a group of undocumented immigrants.
Traffic from the intersection of FM 3167 and Highway 83 was redirected. Rio Grande City firefighters say that one of the vehicles was on fire when they arrived to the scene.
Crews were able to extinguish the flames quickly, according to a social media post made by officials with the city.
Witnesses told authorities they saw several people jump out of the burning SUV.
Border Patrol is still on the scene searching for the group that fled, officials say they fear they are seriously injured.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
