On Nov. 8, Cameron County voters approved a two percent hotel tax increase to help fund a new project for South Padre Island.
“It’s going to give us an opportunity to provide better amenities and do things better for the people of Cameron County,” said Cameron County Administrator David Garcia.
Beginning closer to April 2017, the county will begin collecting the taxes to help fund the construction of the Sea and Air Amphitheater, according to Garcia.
“It’s about $2, depending on your stay. So it’s a two percent stay across Cameron County,” said Garcia.
The first of its kind on the island, the amphitheater is designed for visitors to witness what will soon be the SpaceX South Texas Launch Site across the ship channel.
The expected $1.5 million project will be located at Isla Blanca Park.
The funding will also help build an educational facility outside of Laguna Vista. It is expected to cost about $10 million.
