A second traffic stop in just two weeks by the Cameron County Sheriff deputies leads again to cocaine… about 60 lbs, more than 27 kilos of it.
Deputies arrested 32 year old David Lopez yesterday when he was stopped by deputies while driving northbound on highway 69 just north of highway 100.
According to the sheriff, lopez looked and acted nervous prompting the deputies to search his vehicle.24 bricks of cocaine were found in a box just behind Lopez’s driver’s seat.
The Cameron County Sheriff says it is possible that Lopez is a low level distributor for the drug cartel.
“Now this is a little bit more.. But, if you compare what other people are transporting, you know fifty, a hundred pounds of cocaine, well that’s too heavy so it’s just kind of hard to say,”” says sheriff Omar Lucio.
The cocaine is estimated to be worth about $800,000 dollars. Lopez was given a $50,000 dollar bond.
The sheriff continues to investigate.
