Cameron County officials and several other local organization this month are raising awareness on child abuse, an issue they say is all too common.

In Cameron County alone, nearly 10,000 cases are reported to the district attorney’s office annually. Many of which are cases of sexual abuse and neglect.

“Unfortunately the majority of the children that we see come in have been sexually abused by someone. Unfortunately, the perpetrator is usually someone they know. So it’s important not just to educate the children and not only the parents, but the community,” said Anna De La Cruz, Executive Director of Cameron County Children’s Advocacy Centers Maggie and Monica’s House.

For the remainder of the month, the organizations will hold workshops and events to educate the community on child abuse prevention and services.

To file child abuse report, you can call the child protective hot line at 1-800-422-4453 or calling 911.
