The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office and volunteers with the Brownsville Wellness Coalition worked Friday to clean up debris and plant vegetation at Tres Angeles Park — a memorial site where three children were brutally murdered 15 years ago.

Volunteers worked to beautify the park on the 800 block of Tyler Street, a location where an apartment building once stood and the site where Angela Camacho and John Allen Rubio murdered their three children on March 11, 2003.

“Contributing and doing something positive in an area where a lot of negativity was once before,” said Brownsville Wellness Coalition Gardening Coordinator David Vasquez, who helped with beautification efforts.

Tres Angeles Park is marked by three trees that represent each child who was killed: 2-month-old Mary Jane Rubio, 1-year-old John Esthefan Rubio and 3-year-old Julissa Quezada.

Camacho is currently serving three life sentences. Rubio remains on death row.
