Budweiser Clydesdales in the Valley for Border Fest

Local News

For the first time in more than two years, the Budweiser Clydesdales are visiting the RGV.
Since the early 1930’s these world famous horses have been an integral part of Budweiser’s marketing
campaign.

Shelby Zarobinski – Clydesdale Handler said, “So we get here at around 7:00 in the morning and the
horses are ready to be fed. Then we’ll turn them out in a pasture that we set up or we hand walk them for
about an hour a day. Then, depending on the day, like today is our prep day, so all 10 horses are getting
washed, all eight sets of harnesses are getting cleaned. And then in the afternoon, around 2:30 or 3:00
the horses get their evening meal. And we’ll have a night duty person come on, and start the day all over
again.”

Since 1933, after the repeal of prohibition, these 6 foot Clydesdales have been known as the face of
Budweiser. Today, these 2,000 pound beasts travel to different events across the country.

Doug Bousselot – Supervisor said, “We just like to bring them around so people can see them. It’s just the
expression you get to see on the people’s faces. There’s kids and grandparents, and they both get to see
and remember how big they are.”

Now just a few quick facts about these beautiful Clydesdales. Some of them eat as many as 50 pounds of
hay and 10 pounds of grain per day.

Doug Bousselot, “They have a nutritionist, and they have a physical about twice per year to check their
condition. And then we feed them appropriately. They get however many calories the vet and nutritionist
determines is best for their natural shape.”

Alongside the Clydesdales folks may also recognize their best friend, the Dalmatian.
Since 1950 these spotted dogs have been serving as the Budweiser Clydesdale’s mascot.

And if you and your family want to check out the Clydesdales, they’ll be at Borderfest in the city of Hidalgo
this weekend.
