The Brownsville Public Utilities Board is warning customers about salesmen going door-to-door offering water filtration systems and claiming that they work with them.

In a release, the Brownsville Public Utilities Board said they have received reports of two salesmen posing to work for the company selling water filtration products, requesting access into customer’s homes to inspect their water system and/or install a water filtration system. On some occasions, the men showed customers an unauthorized letter from the Brownsville Public Utilities Board inside a plastic sleeve but wouldn’t allow customers to read the letter.

The Brownsville Public Utilities Board says customers can avoid being a victim by asking for a contractor badge with the Brownsville Public Utilities Board logo, verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the Brownsville Public Utilities Board by calling (956) 983-6121, never allow anyone inside their home to conduct unsolicited or non-scheduled inspections, and never provide Social Security numbers, credit card numbers or bank account information.

The release added that the Brownsville Public Utilities Board is conducting a state-mandated customer service inspection of the public water system and has contracted Hardin & Associates Consulting LLC, to conduct the home inspections. Officials say those inspections began in October and are part of the Cross Connections Control and Backflow Prevention Ordinance that was approved by the Brownsville City Commission on Dec. 4, 2018.

The Brownsville Public Utilities Board says the contractor from Hardin & Associates must have the following items: letter to residents from the Brownsville Public Utilities Board, contractor identification badge with the Brownsville Public Utilities Board logo, a Brownsville Public Utilities Board decal on inspector’s vehicle and a Hardin & Associates uniform, hat, and ID.

If you receive any unsolicited requests for property access, payments, personal information, and bank routing numbers should be reported to the Brownsville Police Department at (956) 548-7000 or your local police department.
