An interim superintendent has been appointed for the Brownsville Independent School District.
As Local 23 News reported, Superintendent Dr. Esperanza Zendejas was placed on administrative leave with pay on January 11. The BISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Sylvia Hatton as interim superintendent. Her recent employment experience includes serving as an education consultant for the Region 13 Education Service center.
Timothy Cuff, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum/Instruction, “She’s going to continue to provide leadership with our district and that’s good. Our district is very innovative, and we have a lot of programs. A lot of grants that we’re doing right now. I think she’s going to fit in. We’re going to include her, but at the same time we’re going to be looking at her leadership and she joins us next week.”
A special meeting was held on Friday to discuss the consideration of suspending Dr. Zendejas. After almost three hours of discussion, the board unanimously voted to suspend the superintendent with pay pending further review. The district says they will not make any further comments as it is a personnel matter.
