Border Patrol stops human smuggling attempt in La Joya

McAllen Border Patrol agents working in La Joya said they apprehend 19 smuggled individuals.

According to a press release, agents observed the 19 subjects run into a truck that was waiting less than half a mile away from the Rio Grande River.

Officials said mobile units responded and encountered the vehicle traveling north towards Expressway 83.

The driver of the vehicle turned into a residential street, after seeing the Border Patrol units, where the passengers and driver abandoned the vehicle, said the release.

Authorities informed the occupants attempted to evade apprehension by going into a nearby wooded area.

After several hours of searching with the assistance of air assets, agents said they were able to apprehend the individuals smuggled.

According to the release, the driver of the vehicle was not located.
