Border Military Support Extended

Local News

The pentagon has agreed to extend military support at our border.

This comes after a request from the Department Of Homeland Security.

Acting Secretary of Defense, Pat Shanahan approved Department of Defense assistance to the Department Of Homeland Security through September 30th of this year.

About 2,300 active duty troops deployed to the southwest border were initially scheduled to wrap up their deployment by the end of this month.

President Donald Trump ordered the deployment in October in an effort to crackdown on illegal immigration as thousands of migrants made their way to the U.S., fleeing violence in Central America.

The pentagon says it’s transitioning its support at the border from hardening ports of entry, to mobile surveillance and detection, as well as concertina wire emplacement between ports of entry.

The Department of Defense will continue to provide aviation support.
