It may look like any other box, but for many it’s a blessing.
The Mission Food Pantry, along with the Boy Scouts, have opened up a blessing box, a small mailbox that is full of all kinds of food for anyone who needs some.
The goal is to make sure Mission residents always have something to eat, even when the food pantry is closed, the blessing box always stays open.
“Lately they’re taking everything, we’re putting food in the morning. At noon and before we leave, it’s gone by the time we leave at 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m.,” said Adela Ortega, who is in charge of the Mission Food Pantry.
“It’s truly a blessing because I have a family of 5. We’re a big family and this is a blessing because sometimes we don’t have any food so we come here and we’re so grateful,” said Mayra Cruz, a Mission resident who uses the blessing box.
Cruz walks to the blessing box from her home down the road when the family doesn’t have enough food.
“There’s a lot of people that really need it and we don’t know where to go, but this is a blessing for us because this isn’t common. To have this here, it’s really a blessing to come and the door always be open regardless of the hour,” said Cruz.
Ortega, who fills up the blessing box every morning, said now more than ever the food is going quick.
“We don’t turn nobody down. Whoever comes through that door is given food and I had five families yesterday, furloughed families that are not getting a paycheck but need food,” said Ortega.
All the food is donated as the Mission Food Pantry is not funded by the city and does not have a budget.
“It’s a community effort and it’s wonderful see the community get involved and contribute to the cost in the community,” said Ortega.
If you’d like to donate food or clothes, you can drop off your items at The Mission Food Pantry Monday thru Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. The Food Pantry is located at 115 S. Mayberry Road in Mission.
