Binational conference helping to combat the HIV epidemic

Local News

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – A binational HIV conference taking place to discuss the HIV epidemic in the Rio Grande Valley and along the Texas-Mexico border.

Agencies from Tamaulipas, Mexico and south Texas teaming up to provide better treatment plans and care for people living with HIV. In the Rio Grande Valley close to 2,300 people are living with HIV, according to health experts.

“Achieving Together” is a plan created to combat the epidemic in Texas.

Pedro Coronado, Valley AIDS Council Care Director, “Part of it is reducing the amount of people getting, becoming HIV positive, acquiring HIV. The other part is those that are HIV positive, that they find out that they are, that they access treatment and that they stay on treatment.”

The goal for “Achieving Together” is for Texas to become a state where HIV is rare. Where every person has access to treatment; regardless of their background.
