Beloved Valley Educator Laid to Rest

Local News

A beloved South Texas educator has passed away after 39 years of educating students in the Rio Grande Valley.

Mauro Vasquez was a strong believer that education is the key to changing lives. After retiring in 2004 he continued dedicating his life to education and his students.

Mauro Vasquez Jr., “He was known for saying no surrender no retreat. Go hard or go home. Those were his students.”

With 26-year career in the Mercedes Independent School District, Mauro Vasquez impacted thousands of students’ lives and assured that every student who came to him succeeded.

“He stayed active in the education field by working with Texas Pan American for teacher certification. He would observe student teachers and work them, you know to try to make them tough. I felt bad for them because he always thought there’s never a perfect observation. He wanted them to strive higher. That was dad.”

Mauro Vasquez was 76-year-old. He also served as head basketball coach, junior and high school principal for Mercedes ISD. He leaves behind a wife, one son, one daughter, and grandchildren.
