The 9th Annual Literacy Fair at the Brownsville Public Library is underway.
It’s an event that promotes literacy, education, and well-being the residents. The event is hosted by the Brownsville Literacy Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the community. We met with the organization’s leader to discuss literacy problems in the area.
Emily Young – Education Director said, “They want to be able to provide for their families. Help their children with their homework. That’s the reason why they may be here or maybe learning enough English to obtain their U.S. Citizenship.
People commonly associate literacy with the ability to read. However, the organization tells us their programs also extend to computer skills, financial literacy, and continuing education.
