For the next few hours the city of Harlingen will be hosting a block party celebrating Cinco de Mayo downtown.
The event is free and will be held at George Gutierrez Jr. Veterans Park on Friday May 3.
Entertainment includes mariachi and dancers.
“So many of us have Mexican-American relatives and the majority of us know somebody of Hispanic-American descent, and while it’s not a very big holiday in Mexico,” said Irma Garza, Harlingen public information officer. “It’s still an opportunity for us to get together and say hey I appreciate you.”
City leaders said the event is a chance to connect people with the Mexican culture.
According to Wikipedia, Cinco de Mayo is the an annual celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.
