Annova LNG Application Withdrawn

Local News

It’s a positive sign for both supporters and the opposition. At least that’s what both sides tell News Center 23 this week. The Army corps of Engineers withdrew a permit application for Annova LNG. That’s one of the 3 Liquefied Natural Gas companies looking to settle in the Port of Brownsville.

An information request about a gas supply pipeline was the reason for the withdrawal. According to a letter from the federal agency the information request was to be fulfilled within 30 days. The company asked for an extension for November 2nd. That request was not approved, but the option remains to re-apply.

We reached out to Annova’s parent company and local Anti-LNG groups to learn more about this latest development.

Exelon, Annova’s parent company says the update is a positive evolution of the project in a written statement. They claim that they will be reaching negotiations regarding natural gas suppliers by this fall. They also plan to re-submit their application.

Longtime Anti-LNG activist and Sierra Club Organizer, Rebekah Hinojosa says, “the Army Corps of Engineers delaying this permit is a good thing for those communities that are opposed and concerned.”

We’ve seen anti-LNG supporters since 2016. Most claim that they are concerned with potential negative impacts to the environment and the community.

Such is the case with John Young. He believes the pollution would be detrimental to the area.

Those in favor of LNG often citing job creation and a positive economic impact.

LNG in Brownsville is not a done deal. Currently all 3 companies looking to settle in Brownsville must complete the required permitting process.

We’ll continue to bring you updates as more information becomes available.
