For the first time citizens in the community will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with Alton police officers.
Participants will be part of the Alton Police Citizens Academy that started Thursday, May 2.
It’s an eight week training program giving community participants a look behind the curtain of local law enforcement.
“This program is meant to be interactive,” said Jonathan Flores, Alton police chief. “They’ll be going on ride alongs and spending time in our communications center.”
Flores said the participants will also learn police investigation skills with crime scene mock ups.
According to Flores, he launched the program in hopes of more community transparency and involvement.
