Air Fiesta Prepares For Weekend Air Show

Local News

Preparations are almost complete for the 2017 Air Fiesta.

This is an annual festival where pilots show off their best moves in the sky.

People have a chance to see the planes up close this weekend.

The planes are here and ready to fly at the Brownsville Airport.

The 26th Annual Air Fiesta is underway.

It begins this weekend. Today, preparations continue… From stands to maintenance, crews are working hard to be ready in time for visitors.

David Hughston the Air Show Chairman of the event says, “We try to do something different every year and this year we have the micro jet… that little-bity jet for the first time ever.”

This event will boast modern and classic planes. There will be plans to recreate famous aerial battles.

They plan to include artillery and all.

“It’s a combination of dynamite and gasoline, actually,” says Hughston, “and detonation cord. That’s kind of the simple way to put it.

This event is run by volunteers. Professional pilots will be available as well. They expect the air show to be safe for everyone.

“We have to go through a rather rigorous safety plan before we get permission to do the show to keep both our pilots our airplanes and of course our crowd safe,” says Hughston.

They’re recreating history they say. Each plane has a unique story to tell. Each one is ready to hit the skies.

“We like to keep the lessons of history alive,” says Hughston, “that’s one of the reasons we do it. Second reason is because it is our chief fundraiser.”

Proceeds go to the Commemorative Air Force Rio Grande Valley Wing Museum.

The Air Fiesta will run begin at 9AM Saturday and Sunday.

Flights are scheduled to begin at noon.
