LOS FRESNOS, Texas – Students across the country are having to miss out on graduation due to the pandemic. A local Facebook group started ‘Adopt a High School Senior’ in efforts to make their last days special.
With the possibility of high school seniors not getting to walk across the stage for their graduations or even attend prom.
The Facebook page dedicated to adopting high school seniors at Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District is hoping to still make this moment special for their students.
“We are inviting families to showcase their seniors with background information about them, a couple of pictures and with that information you can do whatever you like, you can make them a basket a gift card.” said Liliana Benavidez, founder of Los Fresnos ‘Adopt a High School Senior’
The seniors pictures are posted on the Facebook page and if a family wants to adopt, all they have to do is reach out to the students parents.
Former Los Fresnos students Liliana Benavidez and her sister Anahi Perea started this to make seniors know they are not forgotten.
“Keep on going. I know this is hard. I know this is not what you guys had envisioned for yourself. There’s probably not going to be a graduation, no prom, none of that. Just know Los Fresnos CISD is behind you,” said Benavidez.
To make seniors feel extra special, local businesses are offering giveaways to encourage them on their last days as high school students, according to Benavidez.
“Los Fresnos based businesses are doing giveaways for seniors there’s haircuts, there’s shirts being made, signs for your graduates that way people know you have a graduating senior this year.”
With nearly 900 students graduating this year. Benavidez is hopeful every student will get adopted and make this moment memorable.
