Access To Health Care in Rio Grande Valley Still Big Issue

Local News

Access to health care continues to be a big issue in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Texas House of Representatives Human Services Committee hosted a public hearing this morning. It focuses on how the Medicaid system can improve in South Texas. Nurses and therapists say one of the biggest issues is services being delayed or denied to critical patients.

Dr. Robert D. Martinez – Chief Medical Officer at DHR said, “To have someone who doesn’t have the knowledge telling you that it’s not approved, really puts a damp on us, really treating the patients the way they need to be. It prolongs patients’ hospitalizations, it results in re-admission to the hospital. It really doesn’t facilitate the appropriate care for the patient.”

Officials also say there is a decrease in the physician workforce due to the lack of care given by the Medicaid program. Physicians are hopeful to see changes next year in regulations that will improve care delivery.
