HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The new Academy Sports and Outdoors in Harlingen opened its doors Sunday.
The city of Harlingen posted photos of the soft opening over the weekend. The new store is located at 2833 W. Expressway 83.
The official grand opening will be held Friday beginning at 9 a.m.
City officials said in the post it is “the biggest Academy Sports + Outdoors in all of Cameron County.”
In celebration of its grand opening, the sporting goods stores will be donating a $5,000 shopping spree to the Harlingen CISD Clothing Closet.
On Thursday morning, 20 students will receive a $150 Academy gift card to shop at the store before the grand opening. They will be able to choose from a variety of new clothes shoes, sports equipment, outdoor gear and more.
The store will donate the remaining $2,000 to the Harlingen CISD Clothing Closet for any additional apparel and equipment.
Construction of the nearly 60,000 square foot building began in the spring in the Harlingen Corners retail center off the frontage road. It cost $7.4 million to build.
Academy says the new store will employ 60 people.
