WESLACO, Texas — Local businesses are taking a hit as shelter-at-home orders are issued across the Valley, and a local restaurant is doing what it can to stay open while helping the community.
The Garcia family are the proud owners of Teddy’s BBQ in Weslaco.
The restaurant focuses on making the ultimate Texas meal.
Brisket, sausage smoked chicken and barbacoa, can all be found on the menu.
“It takes anywhere between 12 to 14 hours,” said Jesse Garcia, part-owner of Teddy’s BBQ.
The Garcia’s opened Teddy’s BBQ nine months ago and choose to name the restaurant after their son.
“No one here is actually named Teddy. He is actually two. He doesn’t know how to cook yet… but he will,” said Bernardina Garcia, part-owner of Teddy’s BBQ.
The restaurant has adapted by moving sales strictly online.
Bernardina adds she has also had to change the way she teaches her students.
“Besides being an owner, I’m actually a teacher too…while we are having to figure out out restaurant, and the way it’s going to run, I’m actually trying to figure out how to teach online with my kiddos.”
Even through difficult times, the Garcia family has found ways to help the community.
Teddy’s BBQ has donated meals to H-E-B workers and first responders.
“We just wanted to say thank you,” said Bernardina. “That is a really big thing for us, is making sure we say thank you.”
The restaurant has also started an initiative to help other families in need. They are asking the community to purchase a family pack on their website. They then contact a caseworker that connects them to a family in need.
Bernardina adds one last request to parents.
“Parents as a teacher, please make sure you are reading with your kids…daily check-ins with your teachers. If we are bugging you, its because we miss our kids”
Teddy’s BBQ is located on 2807 Texas Blvd N, Weslaco.
