Local News

MCALLEN, Texas (KVEO) — A comic book store forced to evolve amidst the pandemic is now figuring out their next chapter.

“This is a kingdom of comics and pop culture,” said Ramsey Ramirez, owner of Kaboom Comics.

Inside the comic book store, you will find everything from Marvel, DC, Avatar the Last Air Bender, Spider man and Power Rangers just to name a few.

“We have books we have action figures, we have statues, we have pop-figures, we have so many items for you to choose from,” said Ramirez.

Ramirez opened Kaboom Comics 10 years ago, turning his passion into livelihood.

“Some of the most popular helmets, this is the green ranger helmet.”

Founding South Texas Comic-Con six years ago, Ramirez sharing his love of cartoons, anime and comics with others.

“I think our first show had maybe about 1,000 people, and our last show had about 20,000,” said Ramirez.

Unfortunately due to the pandemic, this year’s show did not go on.

“We are hoping to be able to pick up next year, at around the same time the last weekend of April,” said Ramirez.

Ramirez is hopeful he can still bring Anime Fiesta, a smaller convention, in October

“We have over 150 vendors with all kinds of stuff they bring from the U.S. and the world,” said Ramirez.

Kaboom closed its doors for about a month before the governor allowed retail to open back up In the meantime Ramirez’s goal was to have everything he had in the store available online.

“We can mail stuff to you, we can deliver it curbside, you can pick how you want to receive it you can actually still come into the store,” said Ramirez.

Before you step inside, make sure you have a mask on and sanitize your hands at the front.

“That way everything in here stays clean, it is books, it is toys, things that you do want to pick up and look at and that way it keeps it safe for everyone else,” said Ramirez.

As a lover of fiction and a good story, Ramirez still can’t believe what this year has brought,  “We see movies, we see Hollywood really build it up and here we are pretty much living it.”
