MCALLEN, Texas — Over 400 pairs of shoes have been collected for migrants at the Catholic Charities Respite Center. The 31 by 31 challenge began in May after two Valley educators challenged the community to donate 31 pairs of shoes in a month to help women, men, and children walking with torn shoes from their journey to the United States.
Edith Trevino, teacher, “The community response was very positive. I did have a couple of people who were like, ‘I will support you and I will donate x amount of shoes or x amount of money but I don’t want people to know because it’s a political issue.’ We respect that. To us it’s not a political issue, it’s a humanitarian issue, and about children. At the end of the day we’re all very blessed. Why not give back to a cause that’s important to humanity.“
Treviño says the challenge gained attention across the state and plans to continue collecting shoes.
